Information for schools

We welcome visits from school parties - enthusiastic schools audiences contribute to the vibrant atmosphere at HGLT and we are committed to providing engaging and affordable theatrical experiences for young people. We hope the following information will assist your group’s enjoyment of the performance. The trip leader should read these guidelines before embarking on the theatre visit with students.

Preparing for your visit

Upon receipt check your tickets or email confirmation carefully. Ensure you have the correct number for the appropriate performance, date and time. The performance must start promptly so please arrive in good time. If you realise that you are going to be late please inform us as soon as you are able by calling the Box Office on 0121 7071874 – this will help us to accommodate your late arrival if we can.

At Hall Green Little Theatre

We encourage schools to be part of the theatre audience. This means that the same standards of reasonable conduct are expected of your pupils as of any other member of the audience. Please discuss appropriate behaviour and expectations with your students prior to
their arrival at the theatre.

We remind you that pupils remain the responsibility of the accompanying staff while in the theatre. Please ensure that staff accompanying your students are distributed amongst your party when you take your seats.

  • Please note that the taking of photographs and videos is strictly forbidden during all performances.

  • We’d also like to remind you that talking throughout the performance is very distracting to other audience members so we expect talking to remain to an absolute minimum.

  • Mobile phones must be switched off before entering the auditorium.

  • Texting can be just as distracting as ringtones so please insist that students’ phones are turned off, not just put on silent.

  • Access on to the stage area is not permitted and can be dangerous. Please supervise students at all times whilst in the auditorium.

We hope you find this information useful, and look forward to welcoming you to HGLT.

Do not hesitate to contact us on 0121 707 1874 should you require any further assistance or information prior to your visit.

Risk assessment information for schools and education groups visiting HGLT

Hall Green Little Theatre is committed to providing its audience with a safe environment and an enjoyable visit.

Before you visit, your school/college/university or organisation may wish to conduct its own risk assessment. Whilst HGLT cannot write this risk assessment for you, we will assist you with information that you feel is relevant. There is no generic risk assessment available for you attending a performance.

Some useful information is included below which may be useful to organisations completing a risk assessment prior to visiting the theatre:

  • The theatre spaces on site and front of house areas are designed and maintained for public use.

  • All areas for public use will be adequately lit, with emergency routes clearly sign posted.

  • For show times a Duty Manager is allocated to manage the safety of the public in the venue.

  • Children, young people or vulnerable people remain the responsibility of teachers, guardians or chaperones and must be accompanied at all times during their visit to HGLT.

  • We ask that there is one teacher for every ten students and that the teachers must sit amongst the students during the performance.

  • The Veitch auditorium is fully wheelchair accessible – please contact the Box Office team if you have accessibility queries. Please note the Studio auditorium is only accessible via a flight of stairs.

  • The HGLT has policies; procedures and work practices in place and fire risk assessments are undertaken for each area in the building. In our dedication to the safety of our visitors we will in particular ensure the following:

  • Public areas will be kept clean and clear of trip hazards

  • Materials used in front of house areas will be suitable for public areas

  • All electrical equipment will be PAT tested and regularly inspected

Any required warning notices for productions including elements such as strobe effects, smoking or loud audio effects will be prominently displayed in front of house areas

HGLT is licenced by Birmingham City Council as a place of entertainment and complies with guidance given including minimum standards of fire protections and maximum number of people permitted into the building at any one time.
