Art

Meet the cast and crew

Three friends - Serge, Marc and Yvan - find their previously solid 15-year friendship on shaky ground when Serge buys an expensive painting.

About the Author – Yasmina Reza

Yasmina Reza is one of the most widely performed contemporary playwrights in the world. Born in Paris in 1959, she trained as an actress before turning to writing, quickly gaining international recognition for her sharp, intelligent examinations of modern relationships.

Her play Art premiered in Paris in 1994 and became a global phenomenon, winning the Molière, Olivier and Tony Awards and being translated into more than thirty languages. It remains one of the most successful plays of the late twentieth century.

Reza’s work is celebrated for its wit, elegance and psychological precision. Her plays expose the fragile foundations of friendship, identity and ego, revealing how seemingly small disagreements can uncover deeper emotional truths. Other major works include God of Carnage, Life x 3 and The Unexpected Man.

Director - Matt Ludlam

Art has been on my “to do” list for nearly twenty years, quietly waiting for the right moment. I joined HGLT fifteen years ago with the intention of directing, but once I stepped onto the stage it proved rather difficult to get me off it.

I realised it still feels as relevant, and as much fun, as I imagined all those years ago.

This production marks my first time directing for HGLT, and I could not have wished for a more enjoyable experience. Often described as a comedy about a painting and a tragedy about friendship, Art uses humour to explore how easily relationships can be tested by pride, insecurity and the need to be understood. You may find yourself forming some surprisingly strong opinions about a very simple piece of art.

My thanks go to Louise Price for her support as Assistant Director, and to our wonderful cast for their generosity, trust and comic timing. With their laughter, warmth and honesty, this long-awaited project has been a true team effort.

Thank you for supporting our theatre - we hope you enjoy the show!
